After a tight series they lost against the Red Sox, the Reds won game 1 against the Pirates. The top of the line-up responded in what looks like another surge of Reds offense that is extremely oscillating in 2024. India went 3 for 4 with three runs, De La Cruz reappeared in his Slugger form hitting 3 for 5 with 1 HR, 1 2B and driving 3 of the 11. The young line-up of Reds probably hides greater qualities than that of Pirates, even so the very low production of hits being the 2nd worst in this aspect and the fact that Reds have a record of 6-14 in games decided by a one-run difference are the main reasons for their negative record.

Another young team, Pirates, is going through even worse offensive problems. Having the last wild card within their reach, the fans are asking them to position themselves during the All-Star break as buyers and not sellers. But the Pirates are 28th in SLG and OPS, something not very encouraging that will hardly bring them closer to fighting in the long term. Last year the series in Cincinnati had many runs and in Pittsburgh they were the opposite, the first game showed signs of maintaining the trend (11-5).
