It will be the 3rd meeting of the season this Tuesday when the Pittsburgh Penguins (15-11-9) head into Scotiabank Arena to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs (15-15-5). So far, the Leafs have had their way in the season series. They lead 2 games to 0 and have outscored the Pens 11-5. However, 7 of those goals came in their latest meeting back in late November. Auston Matthews scored and assisted on a goal in each of their previous victories.
More recently, the Leafs have been struggling. They have lost 5 of their last 6 games, including 3 straight losses. In their last 3 losses, the Leafs have given up 14 goals and have struggled offensively, only scoring 4 goals total of their own. Dennis Hildeby is set to be in the net for the Leafs. That may not bode well for the Leafs as Hildeby has allowed a total of 17 goals over his last 4 starts.
For the Pens, things have been even worse. After winning their 1st two games of the month, they had lost 8 straight games before finally snapping that losing streak on Sunday. It took a shootout, but the Pens finally got a win by defeating the Montreal Canadiens at home.
In a matchup of two teams floundering, this one could come down to whichever team makes the fewest mistakes. The Leafs will look to make it 3 straight wins over these Pens and force them into a potential new losing streak.
