One of the highlights of the NHL action on Sunday is the 45-20-5 Colorado Avalanche hosting the 30-30-9 Pittsburgh Penguins. Winning the Central Division will be a big plus for the Avs postseason hopes given they have been so strong at Ball Arena this season but only a little better than average on the road. They are tied with the Dallas Stars at the time of writing, a single point behind the Vancouver Canucks for the lead in the West. Eight straight wins coming in is comfortably the longest current streak in the league, winning three of their last four at home by a five-goal margin. The highest scorers have seemingly sorted out their defensive issues, with just 19 goals against in their last 10 games.
This is the 9th season of Mike Sullivan's reign in Pittsburgh. The team didn't finish under .600 for him until last season with the franchise flirting with a losing record this campaign for the first time since 2005-06. That was Sidney Crosby's rookie season, the veteran is now aged 36 and is one point away from 70 on the season. Jake Guentzel being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes will have upset many fans but Michael Bunting who was part of the return has six points in eight games so has made a fast start as a Penguin. They have lost seven in a row on the road, 3-6 at the Dallas Stars on Friday and 2-5 at the New Jersey Devils in the first two games of this trip. The lack of goals has been an issue all season and they now have to face the strongest offensive team in the league.
