The Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres are looking to recover from overtime defeats in a head-to-head clash on Thursday at KeyBank Center.
Buffalo just returned from Florida, where they beat the Panthers 5-3 but then lost a tough game to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Lindy Ruff’s team fell 4-3 on Tuesday, even though they led 3-2 with less than a minute left in regulation.
That same night, Pittsburgh lost 5-4 to the New York Islanders in a similar way. They were ahead with five minutes left but couldn’t hold on. After also going down 3-2 to Ottawa on Monday, the Penguins are hoping to avoid a three-game losing streak against Buffalo.
Since the holiday break, Dan Muse’s team has only lost more than two games in a row once. Sidney Crosby and his crew have been sharp on offense, and the goaltending from Stuart Skinner and Arturs Silovs has been solid.
Goaltending could be a key factor in Thursday’s matchup, as the Sabres have one of the hottest netminders in the league with Alex Lyon. The 33-year-old has won 11 of his last 12 decisions and set a new franchise record last month with a 10-game winning streak.
