The 2025-26 NBA season is barely a week old, but the Phoenix Suns are already facing an identity crisis. They'll carry that burden, and a 1-2 record, into the Delta Center on Monday night to face the 1-1 Utah Jazz.
After an offseason that completely reshaped the franchise—shipping out Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal while acquiring Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks—the Suns are navigating a new era. Or, at least, they're trying to. The early returns have been rocky. After a season-opening win, Phoenix has been run off the floor in two straight games, suffering back-to-back blowout losses to the Clippers and Nuggets.
The problem is that this is unequivocally Devin Booker's team, and opponents know it. Booker has been electric, dropping 31 points in two of his first three contests. But as the Clippers proved Friday, the blueprint is simple: smother Booker and dare anyone else to win the game. So far, nobody has.
The Jazz are trying to build something. After splitting their first two games—a high-flying 129-108 win over the Clippers followed by a 105-104 heartbreaker in Sacramento on Friday—Utah looks frisky. Lauri Markkanen is, once again, the focal point. The Finnish forward is coming off a brilliant 33-point performance against the Kings and looks every bit the All-Star.

The Suns' new-look backcourt is already facing injuries. Key acquisition Jalen Green, pegged as the dynamic number-two option, remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. He will not play Monday. Joining him on the inactive list is guard Grayson Allen, who is nursing a hip issue. That leaves Booker and Brooks to shoulder almost the entire offensive load.
The Jazz aren't entirely healthy, either. They will be without veteran forward Georges Niang (foot) and rookie guard Isaiah Collier (hamstring). But their core is intact. Walker Kessler was a defensive force against the Clippers, and second-year guard Keyonte George has looked comfortable orchestrating the offense, averaging 9.5 assists.
This game presents a clear contrast. It's Booker's one-man show against Utah's balanced, developing attack. The Suns are desperate to stop the bleeding; the Jazz are eager to protect their home floor. It will likely come down to which depleted supporting cast can give its star the most help.
