A battle of the NL East began last night when the Washington Nationals (41-38) hosted the Philadelphia Phillies (42-36). The teams are now separated by just 1.5 games in the division, with both still looking up to the Atlanta Braves, who have over a 6-game lead in the division.
The bats were quiet for the Phillies in Game One. Foster Griffin held the Phillies to just 1 run on 4 hits in 7.1 innings of work. He struck out 9 and walked none in the winning effort. The top 5 batters of the lineup for the Phillies went a combined 2-19, with both hits coming from Bryce Harper. Brandon Marsh launched a solo home run in the 7th that cut the lead to just 2-1, but the Nationals posted 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to pull away and ultimately secure the victory.
Tonight, the starters for each side have not been having great seasons thus far, but there are some signs that are pointing to each having a decent start in this one. Jesus Luzardo will go to Philadelphia. While his 4.20 ERA is not optimal, that is mostly inflated due to the 20 runs he allowed in his 1st four starts of the season. He has looked good in his last two starts. He has allowed just 3 runs in 12.2 innings. He will be countered by Zack Littell of the Nationals. Littell pitched his 1st game of the season against the Phillies and held them to 3 runs over 6 innings. He did not pick up the win as the Nationals fell 3-2 in the contest.

Citizens Bank Park is certainly a hitter’s ballpark, and it is evident that these Phillies are just more comfortable hitting in their home stadium. They will be on the road here, and Littell looked good against them in his season debut. We believe the bats will stay cold for both sides here, and the under will come home.
