The Padres' loyal fans are packing Petco Park day after day. While the victories there have been thanks to their diligent starting rotation and elite bullpen, fans are starting to get frustrated that their three biggest stars, Tatis, Machado, and Merrill, are putting up forgettable numbers in the 2026 season.
Of the three, at least Machado responded in the last loss against the Phillies with a home run. Merrill went 0-for-4, and his batting average has already dropped below .200. Meanwhile, inexplicably, Tatis hasn't even hit his first home run of the season. Some are already suggesting that off-field legal issues are causing him mental blocks at the plate.
The Padres urgently need to take a page from what the Phillies are doing, who, although they have a worse record, are finally winning at 28-27, recovering from a 10-game losing streak earlier in the season.
Unlike San Diego, the Phillies' home run stars have been making their presence felt all season and in this series in particular. In Monday's 3-0 victory, Schwarber hit his 21st home run of the season and Marsh his fifth. In Tuesday's 4-3 win, Harper, Realmuto, and Turner all contributed home runs.
