The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies open their three-game inter-league series on Friday at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees are now 4.5 games back off the No.1 spot in the AL East after losing two out of three games against the incumbent leaders, the Toronto Blue Jays, in the previous series. The 56-46 Yankees are averaging 5.2 runs per game and pitching a 4.40 ERA in their last five games, which aren’t bad numbers but not enough to get them over the hump in a brutally competitive AL East.
The 58-44 Phillies are also second in the NL East, trailing the 59-44 New York Mets by a half game. Philadelphia took two out of three games in their most recent series against the Red Sox, though they missed the chance of sweeping Boston following a heartbreaking 8-9 loss in Thursday’s series finale.
