The Minnesota Twins (54-44 SU, 45-53 ATS) look to get some positive momentum going as they host the Philadelphia Phillies (63-36 SU, 52-47 ATS). The Twins didn’t exactly put forth a good showing in their previous series against Milwaukee, as they dropped both games and saw their pitchers get pounded in the process. Minnesota still hasn’t shown that it’s in the upper echelon of the American League, as it’s spent the entire season chasing Cleveland.
Philadelphia has dominated the National League all year, but the weight of the season might be catching up to the Phillies. They’ve been getting every opponent’s best shot, and the past two series might have shown some of the effects. After sweeping the Dodgers — seen as their main competition in October — the Phillies immediately gave away some momentum by losing two of three to both Oakland and Pittsburgh.

Ranger Suarez is not pitching well at the moment. It might be that he’s having less luck than he did earlier in the season, as the same number of hits are landing in the field of play as always. But he’s having far less success scattering his hits as of late. He’s given up at least six hits in seven straight starts, but only the past four have seen runs coming across the plate. In his past four starts, he’s allowed 19 runs, 17 of them earned.
Bailey Ober has been more consistent, and he’s a better pitcher at home than on the road. None of his past six starts have seen more than three earned runs cross the plate, and unlike Suarez, he’s keeping runners off base. Only one of his past five starts has seen more than four opposing batters hit safely. That’s far more sustainable, and it’s why the Twins might add to the Phillies’ misery. Our prediction for Philadelphia vs. Minnesota is for the Twins to win.
