The Philadelphia Phillies (73-51 SU, 62-62 ATS) face off with the Atlanta Braves (66-58 SU, 55-69 ATS) in one of the most crucial series of the year for both teams. For the Phils, the big question is whether they’ve actually gotten themselves back on track or they were just getting healthy off the Nationals. Philadelphia just went on a four-game winning streak before losing one to the Nats, but before that, only the White Sox had been worse since the All-Star break.
Atlanta has to go into this series thinking sweep. The Braves haven’t been great themselves, but they’ve certainly been better than the Phillies over the past month. Atlanta has the lead down to seven games, and a sweep could really put the pressure on Philadelphia, which follows with a tough swing against Kansas City and Houston. If the Phils can’t reverse their momentum, they could be playing for the division when they meet Atlanta again next week.

Is Reynaldo Lopez back to being himself? When he’s at his best, Atlanta possesses a genuine top pitcher who owns a sparkling 2.06 ERA. But he wasn’t himself in his past three starts, which led to the Braves sticking him on the injured list to get him back to normal. He looked solid in a rehab game at Triple-A Gwinnett, and he shut out the Phils the last time he saw them.
As long as Zack Wheeler stays out of the AL East, things tend to go pretty well when he’s on the mound. Wheeler has had three poor starts in 2024, and two of them came at the hands of Baltimore and the Yankees. For the most part, he’s handled the job otherwise. The Phillies did lose 9-3 to the Braves in Wheeler’s only appearance against them, but he can’t be blamed for that: Atlanta had a zero in the run column when Wheeler exited the game after five innings. With Wheeler pitching well and Lopez looking to get back to form, we expect runs to be at a premium. Our prediction for Philadelphia vs. Atlanta is Under 8.5 Runs.
