The Pelicans (25-53, 16-23 Home) will try to stop their current seven-game slide when they host the Orlando Magic (41-36, 17-19 Away) today at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, LA. Fans can follow the action once the game gets underway at 7 p.m. EST via the NBA League Pass.
It is not uncommon to see teams go into late-season slides as they are forced to deal with more injuries than their roster can handle, especially if said team is like the Pelicans, who have been struggling all season long anyway. But we know they are capable of playing solid, winning basketball because they had won five of their last six games prior to their losing streak. However, their chances of winning will greatly diminish if Trey Murphy III and Dejounte Murray are ruled out (currently GTD).
As for the Magic, Orlando halted their losing skid at six games but has gone back and forth between wins and losses ever since. If that pattern holds, they are due for a loss today. However, over their last five games, they’ve played well enough to beat the eliminated teams (Sacramento and Dallas) while getting crushed by two of the three playoff-bound teams (Toronto and Atlanta).

The inexplicable losing streak for the Magic has ended, but it is too soon to say they’ve gotten back on solid ground. They played well enough against their last two eliminated opponents, but if Murray and Murphy end up going for the Pelicans, New Orleans may become a viable underdog. But even if they do set up, I’d still say Orlando is the better, more talented team and should win. However, I can’t say that with enough confidence to bet on them to cover.
