The Nationals parted ways with some veterans at the trade deadline, but with or without them, they haven't been able to stop the run of poor results they've endured for two months, losing 17 of their last 24 games. After a Monday bye, the Nats begin a new series against the Athletics starting Tuesday at Nationals Park.

Although the Nats are considered favorites to win Game 1 against the Athletics by betting sites, the A's could well have a case for winning Tuesday; they've won seven of their last 10 games. Their rookie sensation, Nick Kurtz, weeks after a historic game, went 6-for-6 and 4-for-11 in the A's last series against the D-backs. Severino will be pitching for the Athletics after finally having an excellent outing in Sacramento, but he's put up strong numbers on the road this season and has earned the W in each of his last three appearances.

Gore has a 4-11 record; he will start the game for the Nationals after not being surprisingly traded when there was much speculation about his departure. Gore has excellent strikeout numbers, but had a forgettable second half of the season, allowing 15 ER in three outings.
