The Philadelphia Phillies (17-20) have seemingly turned things around after letting manager Rob Thomson go and inserting Don Mattingly into the former’s role. They are facing the Athletics (18-18) tonight and look to complete the sweep. The Phillies torched the backend of the Athletics’ bullpen in game one to pick up a 9-1 victory. In game two, the story was the same as the Phillies used a late rally against the bullpen to secure the 6-3 win.

The Athletics have not had success in May, losing 4 of their last 5 games. The bullpen has been their main issue. Even when their starter goes 6 innings or more, the bullpen seemingly always implodes and gives up enough runs to cost them the game. JT Ginn will be on the mound tonight for the Athletics, and he is coming off a rough start against Cleveland. He allowed 5 runs on 5 hits while also walking 5 batters in just 4.1 innings of work. That type of start will be even more problematic with the shaky bullpen.

Philadelphia has been on a tear since its managerial change. They have won 8 of their last 9 games, and the stars seem to be rejuvenated. Bryce Harper has been raking, and less-known Brandon Marsh has been leading the offense with a .336 average. Youngster Andrew Painter will be starting tonight. He has had his struggles, but he has the tools to be an everyday starter.

While the Phillies may need to get the young fella some added run support, the Athletics should be obliged with the way their bullpen has performed recently.
