The Oakland Athletics (9-15 SU, 12-12 ATS) look to pick up their second win of this four-game series against the New York Yankees (16-8 SU, 11-13 ATS) after the teams split the first two. Despite their weak offense, the Athletics have made themselves somewhat competitive, covering in both games of this series and four of their past seven overall.
New York's offense has been more inconsistent as of late. The Yankees have won four straight games in which they've scored, but they've been shut out twice in their past four contests. Oddly, New York has been at its best when it doesn't swing the bat at all: only the Dodgers have worked out more walks than the Yankees. That's not necessarily helpful against Oakland; the Athletics' pitchers have been decent with their control and only walk about three batters per game.

Clarke Schmidt has been the kind of pitcher who misses bats throughout his time in the majors, which makes him the right pitcher for this job. Oakland's biggest weakness is that the Athletics strike out far too often. At 242 strikeouts, the Athletics are leading the majors in strikeouts and average more than 10 per game.
Schmidt has averaged just under six per game, and he's done it against some decent teams. Cleveland, Toronto and Houston all rank in the top five in getting the bat on the ball, and Schmidt's lowest total was four strikeouts in 4.1 innings against the Blue Jays. If he can chop through those three lineups, he shouldn't have many issues with Oakland's swish-heavy lineup.
