After the Mets squandered a splendid outing from McLean, they were completely dominated by the Athletics, being shut out by Auckland at Citi Field, who added three more runs in the ninth inning to win the first game of the series 4-0. The Mets' record is 7-7, but their lack of offense is starting to frustrate Mets fans.

Meanwhile, the Athletics continue to play excellent baseball in New York. Against the Yankees, they took two of three at Yankee Stadium, all close, low-scoring games. The pitchers Ginn, Leiter, Perkins, Barlow, and Alvarado combined for the shutout, creating a similar atmosphere at Citi Field.
