Detroit might be coming together faster than anticipated. The Tigers went on the road against the White Sox and Mets and came up with five victories and a one-run loss to get their season started. The Tigers flirted with a .500 record last season, and they look like their pitching staff has grown enough to make a playoff run possible. Detroit currently leads the majors with just 13 runs conceded and ranks second in ERA behind Boston with a sparkling 2.04 mark as a staff.

So far, Tarik Skubal looks like he’s made the step needed to become Detroit’s ace. Last year, he won four of his final five starts of the season and didn’t allow more than two earned runs in any of them. He also clearly likes pitching against Oakland; he faced the Athletics twice last year and gave up zero earned runs in 11 innings while striking out 16 hitters.
The Athletics have already been shut out three times this season, and even though the wind is likely to be helpful, Comerica Park is not. The Athletics don’t have much power in their lineup, hitting just four home runs in the young season. They also average 10 strikeouts per game, which should play right into Skubal’s hands. The Athletics have lost four times already by two or more runs, and because of that, our prediction for Oakland vs. Detroit is Tigers -1.5
