Since June 21, the Red Sox and Athletics have experienced contrasting fortunes; Boston boasts a 33-9 record since then, while the A's are 8-32. At Fenway Park on Sunday, they will play the rubber match of a series in which the Red Sox hope to extend their winning streak to 10 games.

The Red Sox went from June to July to tie a franchise record of 15 consecutive wins, and then, in late July and August, achieved their second-best winning streak of the season, winning nine straight games until that streak ended Saturday with a 3-7 loss to the Athletics. Even so, Boston is on the verge of the playoffs, when just months ago, specialized websites gave them only a 12% chance. In the first game of this series, they demonstrated their dominance, defeating the struggling Athletics 13-1 with a home run by Duran and RBI doubles by Abreu, Yoshida, and Durbin.

In the midst of their winning streak, the Sox took three of the four-game series in Sacramento at the end of July; they hope for the same outcome in all three games at Fenway Park.
