The Oakland Athletics pulled off back-to-back wins against American League East elites as they edged the Baltimore Orioles, 3-2, in the series opener on Friday. The Athletics, who also won the series finale with the New York Yankees 3-1 on Thursday, leaned on solid pitching from their bullpen mainstays Mitch Spence and Mason Miller, plus some timely hitting from Abraham Toro and Brent Rooker to complete a comeback win after being down 1-2 early in the match. The win improved the Athletics’ Road record to 7-7 and 11-16 overall. Although the Orioles suffered only their fifth home loss this season, the setback put them in a two-way tie with the Yankees atop the AL East standings.
Pitchers Matchup:
Athletics’ lefty JP Sears (1-1, 3.38 ERA with 16 Strikeouts) is scheduled for his sixth start. Sears claimed his first win against the Yankees last April 22, shutting down the Pinstripes batters for six innings with seven strikeouts in a 2-0 win by his team. Orioles’ lefty Cole Irvin (1-1, 4.64 ERA with 13 Strikeouts) will make his fifth start and first since shutting out the Kansas City Royals for 6.2 innings on April 21.
