Novak Djokovic, pegged as a -800 favorite, is in for a rough opening match as he goes up against American teen star Learner Tien in the first round of the 2025 US Open.
Djokovic, a four-time US Open champion, will be playing his first match since losing to Jannik Sinner in the semifinal of the 2025 Wimbledon Open, 6-3 6-3 6-4. At this stage of his career, the 38-year-old Djokovic is no longer as active on the tour as he was during his prime years, often prioritizing Grand Slam events above everything else. Djokovic skipped all the big events in this year’s North American hard-court swing, including the Canadian and Cincinnati Open, to keep his body fresh for the US Open grind.
Meanwhile, Tien has made a strong impression in his first-ever North American hard court campaign. The 19-year-old American did not reach the quarterfinals at any of the three tournaments he competed in over the past four weeks, but he scalped the heads of several prominent players, including Andrey Rublev 7-5 6-2 in Washington, and Denis Shapovalov 7-6(4) 7-5 and Reilly Opelka 7-6(3) 6-3 in Toronto.
