Last season, in an entertaining head-to-head tie between Roma and Athletic Club in the round of 16, the Serie A side lost 3-4 on aggregate, ending their Europa League adventure.
The team from the Roman capital has consistently extended their season in the European competitions they've participated in: in 2022, they beat Feyenoord in the Conference League final under Mourinho. The following season, they lost the Europa League final against Sevilla, and last season, they reached the round of 16. Starting Wednesday, Roma, under Gasperini's direction, begins a new European competition in the Europa League; their first opponent will be Nice of France's Ligue 1.
This season, Nice's aspirations were to participate in the Champions League, but they fell in the qualifying round, losing 0-2 in France and in Portugal against Benfica, once again displaying their now almost habitual defensive problems.
Nice participated in the previous Europa League, posting a very disappointing performance, finishing second-to-bottom in the 36-team table. Nice were tied with Qarabag with just 3 points out of a possible 24, the same table where Roma finished 15th.

Of the two traditional teams, Roma are undoubtedly in the better form, as Pellegrini's 38th-minute goal won the Roma Classic at the Stadio Olimpico.
Gasperini played a three-man defensive line against Lazio: Mancini, Celik, and Ndicka, with the Italian center-back having had solid performances of late. So much so that all of Roma's first four matches in the new Serie A ended 1-0, with three wins. Ferguson is almost certain to be present in attack for Roma, and it's unknown whether Dybala will be active in midfield after missing the Roman derby due to injury.
On the other hand, Nice has already completed an unsatisfactory start to Ligue 1, losing to Toulouse at home, Le Havre 3-1 away, and being thrashed by Brest at the weekend.
