Ahead of Wednesday's match against Benfica, Nice had a fairly successful preseason under manager Haise Franck, and will then look to secure a strong result in the first leg against Benfica starting Wednesday at Allianz Riviera to secure their first Champions League appearance since 1960.
Seven days before their important match against the Portuguese club, Nice beat Sheffield United with goals from Sanson, Moffi, and an own goal from Burrows. Nice recovered from a long-term injury to replace Nigerian striker Moffi, who played much of the preseason after missing a long period at the end of last season. In those previous matches, Nice beat Feyenoord, another team in the Champions League qualifying round, 2-1.
Benfica won a warm-up match against Fenerbahçe, Feyenoord's rival, but even better was the 0-1 victory in the Portuguese Super Cup against Sporting Lisbon to kick off the new season. Pavlidis was instrumental with his 50th-minute goal.
