The Yankees' euphoria at defeating the Red Sox in the Wild Card playoff series quickly faded, as they lost to the Blue Jays in Toronto in the first game of a five-game series by a 1-10 thrashing. For the Jays, Gausman started Game 1, surviving the Yankees' bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning, when he struck out Judge with the bases loaded and no outs, swinging at a pitch.

Judge batted leadoff on Saturday, and while some die-hard Yankees fans continue to claim that the skipper doesn't respond in climactic moments like the one in which he struck out, the truth is that Judge has already had six hits this postseason.

For the Jays, the party started early, with a huge home run by Vlad Jr. to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kirk emulated him the following inning with a home run to left field, the first of two he had on the day. Guerrero had three hits in addition to brilliant defensive plays; Giménez, Varsho, Kirk, and Luke each had two, as the Jays doubled the Yankees' hits in the first game of the series.
