The Tampa Bay Rays (6-7) avoided a 3-game losing streak by picking up a win over the New York Yankees (8-5) on Friday night. Steven Matz picked up his 3rd in win just as many starts for the Rays. While he kept the Rays from a 3-game skid, he also sent the Yankees to bed with a 3-game losing streak. Saturday will be game two for this divisional series and will feature two of the best pitchers for each squad.
Max Fried will start for the Yankees. He is 2-0 on the season and is carrying a solid tremendous 1.35 ERA. After beginning the season with 13.1 scoreless innings of work through 2 starts, he finally gave up 3 runs in his last start. He still went 6.2 innings but did not factor into the decision against the Marlins earlier this week. He will be tested here against a Rays lineup that is hitting .253 combined.
Fried will be countered by Tampa’s Nick Martinez. He has started twice this season but has not been a part of either decision. After allowing 2 runs on 6 hits to the Brewers in his opening start, he was even stronger against the Twins on Sunday. In Minnesota, he gave up just 1 run on 1 hit through 6 innings of work.
Runs are likely not going to be easy to come by in this strong pitcher duel matchup down in Tampa.
