After surviving a late scare in Friday’s series-opening win over the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3, the New York Yankees are out to score a decisive victory with their ace, Max Fried, scheduled to hit the mound on Saturday at Busch Stadium.
The Yankees scored their third win in four games, but not before holding off a late fightback from the Cardinals. New York held to a 4-0 lead through five innings, but St. Louis’ offense came alive after Masyn Winn hit an RBI double in the 6th innings. Victor Scott II and Pedro Pages drove in two runs to pull the Cardinals within one run after seven innings. Fortunately for the Yankees, David Bednar earned the final three outs of the match to get his 19th save of the season.
The Yankees remain at third with a 65-57 record, 1.5 games behind the second-place Boston Red Sox and 6.5 games below the AL East leaders, the Toronto Blue Jays. The Cards suffered their third consecutive loss, causing them to fall below .500 at 61-62.

Max Fried is 1-4 with a 6.12 ERA in his last five starts, but the Yankees' lefty is 3-0 with 1.0 runs allowed per game in his last three faceoffs against the Cardinals. The Yankees still possess a solid offense with 4.4 runs per game in their last five games, and very much capable of blowing out teams, especially if the big bats start becoming a factor.
The Cardinals will also have a terrific pitcher starting on the mound Saturday in Sonny Gray. Gray is 3-2 with a 6.26 ERA in his last five starts, but posted two strong mound appearances against the Dodgers and the Cubs, allowing one run over seven innings in both games. He also won his last two starts against the Yankees.
While I am not so sure if the Yankees can cover a -1.5 spread against the Cardinals with Sonny Gray, I see them gutting out a win on the road with a little boost from Max Fried and the Yankees' bullpen. The offense is still there. They are still capable of producing big scoring nights with the weapons they have at their disposal.
The Yankees coaching staff only needs to pick the right arms to finish the job because manager Aaron Boone has been horrible in managing his bullpen as of late. I still haven't lost my faith that the manager will figure it out and get this team back to playing elite-level baseball.
