The New York Yankees (64-45 SU, 58-51 ATS) go for the sweep of the suddenly slumping Philadelphia Phillies (65-42 SU, 54-53 ATS) at Citizens Bank Park. Maybe the Yankees simply have a bad matchup with the Mets but have things figured out otherwise, as they’ve gone 4-1 since getting swept at home by their subway rivals.
Or maybe it’s the the offense has simply decided it needs to kick things into high gear, given the bullpen’s issues. New York hasn’t held leads well all season and blew another one on Friday in Boston, so the hitters have made up the difference. The Phillies are clearly feeling the pressure of having been so good for so long. Something seems to have been left behind when the Phillies swept the Dodgers at home, as Philadelphia has not looked like the same team since that series. They seem to have the right pitching matchup, as Nestor Cortes hasn’t had a good July at all. Part of that could be because he’s been getting mostly division matchups, as his past five starts have all come against AL East opponents.
But the Yankees are 1-8 in his past nine starts, and he’s failed to make it out of the fifth inning in four of his past five starts. Cristopher Sanchez has been more consistent for the Phillies, but he’s also allowed an average of four runs in his past four starts.
