The Yankees were -190 favorites at betting sites to win the first game of the series against the Twins in Minneapolis. Woods Richardson was brilliant and had one of the best outings of his career. The Twins starter pitched six scoreless innings, striking out 11 Yankees. In addition, the Twins offense mounted a five-run seventh-inning rally that sealed the victory for Minnesota.

The Yankees have had numerous games in which one of their pitchers had an unfortunate inning, the opposition rallied against him, and New York lost as a result. This is why there is so much criticism surrounding Aaron Boone, his bullpen management, and his occasional excessive time for pitchers on the mound.

The Yankees allowed six runs, all in the first inning, in the final inning of the series at Fenway Park against the Red Sox. This marks two straight Yankees losses in which they allowed an inning of 5 or more runs, but, truth be told, the Yankees have had a decent September in the toughest part of the schedule.

At the start of the month, the Yankees won series in Houston against the Astros and against the Blue Jays and lost in New York against the Tigers and the game against the Red Sox.
