In the Detroit cold, the Yankees' bats abruptly shut down, and having lost Game 1 2-6, they immediately found themselves at a disadvantage. In Game 2, they would face Cy Young Skubal, who didn't allow a run in six innings, and with Huter's relief, they would lose the series after losing Game 2 0-5.

However, the Yankees will start as solid favorites in Game 3, when the most dominant part of their rotation returns with Fried, as the absence of Cole and Gil left a battered starting rotation that they will still have to carry for much of the season.

Meanwhile, the Tigers continue to maintain their status as one of the MLB's most combative teams. They had already performed well in their games against the Dodgers in Los Angeles at the start of the season. In Game 2, Tolkerson, McKinstry, and Dingler each hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, which, with Skubal's dominance, proved more than enough to win the game. Tolkerson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
