The New York Yankees (60-45 SU, 54-51 ATS) look to get things moving back in the right direction against the Boston Red Sox (55-47 SU, 47-54 ATS). The Yankees appeared to be on track for a badly-needed win on Friday, only to watch the bullpen give up another lead as the Red Sox scrambled back.
Boston has now won five of six against New York, and the Red Sox are just 2.5 games back of the Yankees in the playoff race. Things might get worse before they get better for New York, as Marcus Stroman hasn’t exactly excelled at keeping runs off the board. In his past six starts, he’s allowed at least three runs on five occasions. That includes a June 16 visit to Fenway Park, where the Red Sox tagged him for four runs on seven hits in a 9-3 win.

Boston’s late showing against the Yankee bullpen was both badly needed from the Red Sox’s perspective and emblematic of the Yankees’ issues. New York’s bullpen has some good parts to it, but it has just 27 saves on the season. That ranks seventh in the American League, as the Yankees have decent middle relievers but can’t get the job done at the end.
As a whole, New York actually has a better ERA than anyone else in the AL East. But the Yankees are now the exact opposite of where they were in the Mariano Rivera years: when the game gets to the eighth inning, it’s now open season for their opponents. With Stroman not inspiring confidence and Kutter Crawford coming off a shutout in his most recent start at Fenway, the advantage goes to the home team.
