The Yankees won the first game of this series 3-1; that was a game in which Grisham hit his 17th home run of the season and another two RBIs; he single-handedly drove in all three of the Yankees' runs that day, while the Orioles struggled at the plate, managing only four hits, surprising given how well they hit in their previous series against the Rays.
Wednesday's game brought another victory for the Yankees. Things started off electric for the Orioles when Holliday stole home in the bottom of the first inning, but an RBI single by McMahon and a sacrifice fly by Lombard gave the Yankees the lead. Rice followed with his 34th home run of the year, but Baltimore responded with solo home runs by Alonso and Beavers; the Yankees' new shortstop then came through again to drive in the go-ahead run.
