Aaron Judge has landed on the IL once again, but the Yankees need to stay focused on finishing the regular season strong as they head into the postseason. They will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in game 2 of their 3-game series in Arizona tonight.
The Yankees jumped all over the Diamondbacks early in game one. They posted 5 runs in the first inning and never looked back. Gerrit Cole was strong on the mound. He went 6 innings and allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6. Ben Rice and George Lombard each homered and combined for 5 RBIs in the 9-2 Yankee win. Eduardo Rodriguez did not have his best stuff for the Diamondbacks and took the loss after allowing 7 runs over 5.1 innings.
Arizona is now 5 games back of the final wild card spot in the National League. With just 8 games remaining in the regular season, they are highly unlikely to sneak into the postseason. On the contrary, the Yankees are a lock for the playoffs and likely to finish behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the division. Motivation for Arizona is likely to be lacking here as the season comes to an end for them.
