The New York Mets (40-41 SU, 40-41 ATS) return to their home away from home as they visit the Washington Nationals (39-44 SU, 48-35 ATS). The Mets have dominated this series as of late when playing in the District, as they’ve won four of the past five matchups at Nationals Park. They’ve also been a bit inconsistent as of late, winning two against the American League’s best in the Yankees while stumbling twice against Houston to close their homestand.
One thing David Peterson has always been able to count on when he pitches is good run support. For whatever reason, the Mets have pounded the ball when he takes the mound. In five games since Peterson got healthy, New York has scored 42 runs. That included a win over the Nationals, where he had his longest outing of the year in a 6-3 win.

MacKenzie Gore hasn’t looked great in either of his past two outings. He made it through five innings each time, but he gave up a combined nine runs in those 10 innings and didn’t have his strikeout pitch working last time. Against San Diego, he recorded just one strikeout in five innings of work.
Part of that could be because the Padres excel at getting the bat on the ball (only Houston has fewer strikeouts), but the Mets are also pretty good at putting the ball in play. New York ranks sixth in the majors in OPS and has the sixth-lowest strikeout total in the majors. The Mets make you get them out and tend to hit for both average and power, which makes them a tricky out for any pitcher. If Gore’s strikeouts aren’t there, it’s hard to see the Nationals hanging around. Our prediction for New York vs. Washington is Mets -1.5.
