The New York Mets (78-65) begin an important 6-game road trip that starts with the Toronto Blue Jays (68-76) tonight. The Mets had won 9 straight games prior to their last game against the Cincinnati Reds. Tied in the 9th 1-1, Santiago Espinal hit a 2-run double that gave the Reds a 3-1 lead that ended the game. The Mets, who once thought their playoff hopes were dashed, are now on the cusp of making the wildcard. Tonight, they face the Blue Jays who have lost 5 of their last 6 games to start the month of September. While the Mets are fighting for their postseason lives, the Blue Jays are already eliminated. Paul Blackburn (5-4, 4.66) will be on the mound for the Mets tonight. He is coming off a rocky 2.1 inning start in his last outing. He gave up 5 runs on 10 hits against the Padres. For the Blue Jays, they will have Chris Bassitt (9-13, 4.30) who had a better recent start. He struck out 7 against the Phillies over 5.1 innings and held them to 3 earned runs on 10 hits. Both starters will need to be better or this one could turn into a bullpen session earlier than either team would like.
