The New York Mets (16-15 SU, 16-15 ATS) visit the Tampa Bay Rays (14-18 SU, 11-21 ATS) in a matchup of two badly struggling teams. Neither team has won any of its past three series, with the Rays recently getting swept in a series with the Chicago White Sox. There’s still plenty of time for both teams to recover, but someone needs to put a series win on the board.
New York sends out Jose Quintana, who has been much better at home than on the road. His ERA is three runs higher away from Citi Field, and his last start on the road was a forgettable 5-2 loss at San Francisco where all the runs were charged to him. Even with that, the Mets appear to have the edge in pitching in this game.

Tampa Bay’s pitching, normally a strength, has really come back to haunt it in a big way. The Rays own a 4.63 ERA as a staff and send out Aaron Civale to the hill in this game. Civale hasn’t adjusted well in his first season in Tampa Bay, earning a 5.06 ERA to this point. His past two starts in particular have been poor, as he’s given up 11 runs in nine innings of work.
Quintana looked sharp the last time he took the mound, and as long as he doesn’t get too dependent on trying to get strikeouts, he should be fine. The Rays aren’t hitting the ball all that well, and they’re allowing too many teams to put up good numbers against them. With Civale struggling to adjust to Tampa Bay and the Rays not taking advantage of being favorites, this is the time to go against the grain. Our prediction for New York vs. Tampa Bay is for the Mets to win.
