The Miami Marlins (72-73, 43-30 Home) will try to get back on the right side of the scoreboard today when they host the New York Mets (66-78, 32-38 Away) at loanDepot Park. First Pitch for this NL East battle is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. EST, with coverage provided by MLB.TV.
The last-place Mets are just looking to finish the season. But while the Marlins are 13.5 games back in the division, they are only four games back for the final NL wild card spot. That doesn’t necessarily make this a must-win for them, but with just 17 games to go, they are running out of time.
Sandy Alcantara is scheduled to get the start for Miami. Alcantara has gone 13-9 in 30 starts this season with a 3.54 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Teams have hit .243 against him so far this season. But at home he has been even better, going 6-3 in 13 starts with a 2.58 ERA and a .203 OBA. In his first start against the Mets (August 2), he got the win after pitching six shutout innings.
As for the Mets, they’ll be handing the ball to Sean Manaea to start the day. Manaea has gone 4-7 in 29 appearances with 15 starts, has a 4.70 ERA, and a 1.36 WHIP. Teams have been hitting .286 against him. On the road, he has gone 3-5 with a 4.57 ERA and a .265 OBA.

Jonah Tong was an unproven commodity that ended up being up for the challenge yesterday. But can we say the same about Sean Manaea? I don’t think so. Miami will have a much better day at the plate against him. But they may not need to have a great day because Sandy Alcantara will quiet the Mets lineup down. This will be a tighter game than yesterday’s, but the Marlins will win by 2+.
