The New York Mets will try to showcase their firepower against the retooled Houston Astros in Thursday’s season opener at Dalkin Park.
The Mets landed the biggest free agent last winter, Juan Soto, on a 15-year, $765 million contract – the largest contract in professional sport. New York has a lofty expectation this season after reaching last year's pennant championship. Chris Holmes, who followed Soto from the Yankees, will get to start on opening day for his new team.
The Astros are raring to return to dominance in the American League after succumbing to the red-hot Detroit Tigers in the wild-card phase of last year’s postseason. However, Houston will have to earn their way back to the top with new personnel as most of their key contributors from the past seasons – except Jose Altuve – have already departed and are now playing with their new teams. Framber Valdez has been designated as the opening-day starter. The lefty went 15-7 with a 2.91 ERA last season.
