New York had taken a three-game winning streak into their Saturday night game against the Predators in New York. The game was tied at 3-3 heading into the third period, where the Predators recorded the game-winning goal. As for the Capitals, Washington also last played on Saturday when it hosted the Carolina Hurricanes. The Caps were down 3-2 heading into the third, but Washington tied it at 3-3, sending it to overtime, where they scored the game-winner, making the final 4-3.
This will be the fourth of four games scheduled for this season between the Islanders and Capitals. Washington won the first in the second game of the season (October 11), 4-2. They met again at the end of the month, on Halloween, in Washington, with New York recording a 3-1 victory. The Islanders won the third (November 30) in New York 4-1.
