Tuesday evening, in Toronto, the New York Islanders (38-24-5) will try to knock off the Toronto Maple Leafs (29-27-12) on their home ice. These teams met just once this season, back in early January. That meeting took place in New York, and the Islanders were able to secure a 4-3 overtime win. Matthew Shaefer scored 2 goals, with one being the overtime winner.
The Islanders have won 3 of their last 4 games, and are coming off a 3-2 victory at home over the Calgary Flames. Simon Holmstrom lit the lamp twice, and David Rittich stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced. New York is tied for 2nd in the Metro Division, and a win here would be a big help as the regular season winds down.
For the Maple Leafs, the playoffs are a long shot at best. The 2-6 record they have posted since the Olympics really began to put the playoffs out of sight. However, they have won 2 of their last 3 games, including a 4-2 win over Minnesota on Sunday. So, there is certainly still some fight left in this Toronto team. Fighting is one thing, a drive to reach the playoffs is another.
However, if the Islanders take this Toronto team lightly, they could be in for a rude awakening here on the road.
