The Battle of New York resumes on Sunday as the 43-19-4 New York Rangers host the 29-22-14 New York Islanders. This is the second half of back-to-back games for both with the Rangers in Pittsburgh on Saturday to take on the Penguins and the Islanders hosting the Ottawa Senators. This is the second of four meetings this season, the first was part of the Stadium Series when the Rangers topped the Isles in overtime, 6-5. Artemi Panarin is enjoying the best season of his career, with Chris Kreider hitting the 30-goal plateau for the third straight year as he closes in on 300 for his career. Defensively they have been rock solid at Madison Square Garden, conceding one or fewer in seven of their last nine at home. Their captain Jacob Trouba is on the injured reserve list at present which will give the Isles some hope.
A six-game win streak for the Islanders came to a screeching halt in California when they were shutout by the Los Angeles Kings and then they failed to light the lamp at the Buffalo Sabres in their next game. That's three times that they have been blanked in a 10-game spell. They put 13 past the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks in wins five and six of their streak combined so arrive back in New York with a little to prove. Their problem could easily be compounded given the aforementioned lack of goals that the Rangers have been shipping at home. Brock Nelson leads the Islanders in goals, 13 of his 29 coming on the road. The 2018/19 season was the last time Nelson didn't lead the team in goals so this would be the fifth season in a row.
