Two Metropolitan Division rivals meet on Sunday as the Columbus Blue Jackets host the New York Islanders at Nationwide Arena.
The sides will meet for the second time this season, with Columbus looking for revenge after suffering a 3-2 defeat in New York on Nov. 2. It was a tough pill to swallow for Dean Evason’s team, as the Blue Jackets were 2-1 up with two minutes left in regulation. Matthew Schaefer and Simon Holmstrom scored 29 seconds apart to turn the game on its head.
Schaefer had two goals on the night and will be one of the players to watch again in this matchup on Sunday. The talented defenseman is third in rookie scoring, notching 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists) in 37 games.
The loss to the Islanders ended a four-game winning streak for Columbus, and Evason’s side has picked up only eight wins since. The poor run of form has left the Blue Jackets in last place in the Eastern Conference. Despite their struggles, the team maintains playoff aspirations, highlighted by their recent acquisition of Mason Marchment.
Marchment has had a dream start on his new team, becoming the fourth player in franchise history to score in their first two games. He has tallied three goals in total, the most by a Blue Jackets player through the first two games with the club.

Our Columbus Blue Jackets vs New York Islanders Prediction
The Islanders have struggled recently, going 1-3-0 over their last four games, but top scorer Bo Horvat has been cleared to make his comeback to the lineup. His return will be a welcome boost for the Islanders, especially with goaltender Ilya Sorokin still out. The 30-year-old has averaged nearly a point per game this season, scoring 19 goals and 31 points in 32 games.
Columbus has not lived up to expectations in 2025-26, winning consecutive games only four times. They have a 2-8-1 record over their last nine outings, and the struggles could continue on Sunday against an improving Islanders team.
Our prediction for New York Islanders vs. Columbus Blue Jackets: Islanders to win.
