Thursday evening sees the 33-27-15 New York Islanders traveling to Columbus to take on the 25-38-12 Blue Jackets. Columbus is at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with 48 points but they have won back-to-back games at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Colorado Avalanche. Despite that, they are still only 15-18-5 at Nationwide Arena, one of only three teams in the East to have a negative home record. To beat Colorado was a solid effort, especially as they were missing their captain Boone Jenner as well as number one netminder Elvis Merzlikins, along with Yegor Chinakhov and Adam Boquist on top of an already fair list of absentees. A goal for Kirill Marchenko against the Avs gave him back-to-back 20-goal seasons to start his career off. The 23-year-old Russian was a 2018 draft pick but played four more seasons in Russia before a quick stint with the Cleveland Monsters.
Crunch time is here for the Islanders if they want to claim a wildcard spot for the playoffs. They are on the outside looking in at present but are just a single point behind the Washington Capitals in the second wildcard spot. A run of six straight losses almost derailed their challenge in the middle of March but they have won four out of six since, including on the road at the Florida Panthers and Philadelphia Flyers. Both of those teams are considerably better than the Blue Jackets and the Isles have beaten Columbus in both meetings this season. Every game is a must-win at this stage of the season, needing to treat a trip to Columbus with respect. Mathew Barzal leads the team in points and has 21 in 19 career games against the Blue Jackets.
