Goals from Fernández and a dramatic 95th-minute strike from Traoré secured a victory for New York City FC in their previous match against Atlanta United at home. This leaves the Pigeons with 38 points and provides a much-needed boost, as they remain in contention for a play-in spot with two games remaining. This is especially true given that their next match, against the bottom-ranked team at Yankee Stadium, is quite winnable.

CF Montreal had already been eliminated going into the previous matchday and played accordingly, suffering a 4-0 defeat against Charlotte. They had also previously lost without scoring against Nashville and appear headed for an unseemly end to the season, having gone six games without a win and failing to score two or more goals.

New York City FC hopes to capitalize on their previous victory with another win on Saturday. Irish defender O'Tole is coming off a stellar performance, making five interceptions, but goalkeeper Freese was also crucial with five saves.
