After ending an 11-game losing streak, the Winnipeg Jets attempt to kickstart a winning run on Sunday against the New Jersey Devils at Canada Life Centre.
The Jets finally had some joy on Friday when they beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-1 on home ice. The team jumped to a 3-0 lead early in the second period and had the job done by the second intermission. The victory will help Winnipeg regain some confidence, though it came against an injury-hit team.
It’s been nearly two months since the Jets last won back-to-back games. They have gone from Presidents’ Trophy winners to the worst team in the league incredibly quickly.
The Devils have also faced tough times lately, winning only twice in nine games. They started this week with an embarrassing 9-0 defeat at the hands of the New York Islanders. A three-game losing streak has left New Jersey five points adrift from a playoff spot, and the team won’t have many more chances to get back into the race.
Strangely, New Jersey has been slumping during a time when Sheldon Keefe’s side was expected to rise in the standings. Star forward Jack Hughes ended a five-week absence on Dec. 21, but the team has posted a 2-6-1 record since his return. The Devils have averaged just 1.56 goals over that span.
