The Bengals disappointed last season and need to make a statement in their opener, as they try to rebound from a 9-8 campaign with Joe Burrow once again healthy and under center. Getting off to a fast start is critical here, as the Bengals face a test with defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City in Week 2.
New England is merely hoping to survive this season. The Patriots fell apart last year, winning just four games and barely generating any offense. New England had six games out of 17 in which it scored seven points or less, and the Patriots never could generate anything from their quarterbacks. Drake Maye won’t see the field yet, as Jacoby Brissett will be New England’s starter to open the year.

Cincinnati has to be looking to make a big statement. New England is widely seen as one of the worst teams in the league in 2024, and the Bengals need to have a big showing here to prove that they’re back to looking like themselves. Cincinnati really didn’t like how last year went, as injuries sapped this team’s strength and left it on the outside of the playoffs looking in.
New England stayed competitive last year in Bill Belichick’s final season in Foxboro, but odds are that Jerod Mayo’s going to need time to get his team to even that level. The Patriots have been hampered by bad drafts and free agent signings for years, and everything has caught up with them over the past year-plus. Belichick might not have built the roster well near the end, but he remained an excellent in-game coach. That papered over some of New England’s flaws and kept it more competitive than it should have been. Mayo isn’t there yet as a coach, and he faces a motivated foe. Our prediction for New England vs. Cincinnati is Bengals -7.5.
