Inter Miami is the favorite to win this MLS Cup; they certainly looked like the heavy favorite in the Round of 16, defeating Nashville SC 3-1. The series continues at Geodis Park, the same venue where Inter Miami already triumphed on October 18th, a match in which Messi scored a hat trick and the Herons won 5-2.
Inter will undoubtedly want to capitalize on this series. They fell short in their last international competitions. In the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup, they lost 3-0 to the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final. In their short history, even with Messi, Inter Miami has yet to win the MLS Cup, although they did win the Supporters' Shield in the past.
Nashville SC fans still believe a comeback is possible. After missing the playoffs in 2014, they managed to return the following year, finishing sixth with a goal difference of +15. Furthermore, at Geodis Park, they became the third MLS team with the most points at home this season.

For Inter Miami, the MLS playoffs started at the perfect time, with Messi healthy. Many consider the Argentine the greatest player of all time. He looked completely at ease and even enjoying himself in the Herons' recent victory. Mascherano got the best out of Messi in the first leg, scoring two goals, one a header, and providing an assist. Including the match against Puerto Rico that he played with the Argentine national team, Messi registered an astonishing 8 assists and 7 goals in October alone.
Inter came into the first leg in Fort Lauderdale having won their last three regular-season matches by a margin of two or more goals. The opposite was true for Nashville, who closed out their regular season with a draw against the struggling Montreal and a heavy defeat against Inter Miami. Even so, Nashville isn't discouraged, especially after winning the US Open Cup with goals from Mukhtar and Surridge.

After what happened in Fort Lauderdale, there's no reason to believe Mascherano will make any changes to the starting eleven that dominated Nashville from start to finish. Even better news, there are no significant injuries for the Herons, so former Barcelona players Messi, Suárez, Busquets, and Alba are expected to start. With the latter two having announced their retirements, Messi hopes to give Alba and Busquets one last reason to celebrate by leading them to an MLS championship on American soil.
Messi finished as the MLS's top scorer in the regular season. Bouanga followed, but the Gabonese striker tied with Nashville's most dangerous player, 27-year-old English forward Sam Surridge, with 24 goals. However, Inter Miami's defense effectively neutralized him, leading some to consider him the worst player on the field in the first leg. German striker Mukhtar scored a consolation goal, but it was his fifth goal contribution in the previous six matches.
