The 37-31-12 Pittsburgh Penguins continue their late charge for a playoff spot on Monday when they host the 47-29-5 Nashville Predators. A must-win game for the Penguins if they are to have any hope of making the playoffs in a five-team race for the last two slots. Those hopes took a blow on Saturday when they fell 4-6 at home to the Boston Bruins and the other results went against them. They had previously picked up points in 10 straight in a run where they played the more open game which we have associated with Pittsburgh in the last 15 years. That has meant that they have fallen apart defensively but they have been scoring more.
Nashville have their spot in the playoffs safely wrapped up for this final game of their regular season. An 18-game point streak helped them to get the job done, just 3-4-1 since that franchise record run. They beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-4 on Saturday, falling behind before they took control of the game. When Pittsburgh visited Nashville in November, the Preds picked up a 3-2 overtime win with Michael McCarron lighting the lamp twice in the opening frame. Their record at PPG Paints Arena is just 2-7-1 but they have an opportunity to make up for their 2016/17 Stanley Cup Finals defeat and stop the Pens making the postseason.
