Naomi Osaka of Japan eyes a ticket to the third round of the Wimbledon Open against Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic on Wednesday.
Osaka made sure there would not be another first-round exit as the former world’s No.1 posted a 6-4 7-6(4) win over Talia Gibson. Osaka connected 60 percent of her first serves, winning 36 points. She also added 11 points off her second serves and converted 4 of 5 breakpoint chances. With the win, Osaka matched her second-round finish at last year’s Wimbledon Open. The four-time Grand Slam champion has never played beyond the round of 32 at Wimbledon despite reaching the third round on three separate occasions.
Siniakova defeated Zheng Qinwen 7-5 4-6 6-1 to advance into the second round. Siniakova posted her third grass-court win over the world’s No.6 behind a strong finishing kick in the third set that saw the Czech capture a double break in the deciding set to secure an upset over Zheng. Siniakova is now a career 38-27 on grass and 7-3 on the surface this year.
