In a Western Conference showdown, the San Jose Sharks will host the Minnesota Wild at SAP Center on Wednesday.
Both teams are aiming for their third straight win on New Year's Eve. San Jose bounced back from three losses by beating Vancouver and Anaheim, scoring 11 goals in those two games. Meanwhile, Minnesota recently beat Winnipeg and Vegas.
Minnesota's win over Vegas stood out, as the Wild took a 5-0 lead on the road and finished with a 5-2 victory. Marcus Johansson tied his career high with four points on the night.
Minnesota has won nine of its last 11 games, putting them alongside Colorado and Dallas as one of the league's top teams. They've kept improving even though their penalty kill is just 77.6 percent.
San Jose also struggled on the penalty kill with an efficiency of 78.4 percent, leading to the second-most goals allowed in the league (3.46 per game). Still, the Sharks have remained competitive and are in the playoff hunt.
Macklin Celebrini's progress has been crucial for San Jose this season. After scoring 63 points (25 goals, 38 assists) as a rookie, he already has 60 points (21 goals, 39 assists), trailing only superstars Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.
