On Thursday, the Twins trailed 3-7 at Citi Field against the Mets; they briefly tied the game 7-7 with a three-run homer by Jeffers but ultimately lost that game 10-8 in the final innings and the series as well. They leave New York and head to the newly renovated Tropicana Field to face the Rays in a matchup between teams with nearly identical records.

The Rays had a bye on Thursday; there at home, they had been victims of an offensive explosion by the Reds, losing the first two games of the series 1-6 and 6-12. Then Nick Martinez came through in the third game to dominate his former team, and Tampa took the final game, winning it 6-1.

As for the Rays, three bats are contributing significantly. One of them is that of speedy Chandler Simpson, who is already batting over .323 this season while also stealing seven bases. Cuban veteran Yandy Díaz is batting .340 in 94 at-bats and, of course, the team's star, young Dominican Junior Caminero, already has six home runs this season, many of them in very opportune situations.
