The Padres won 7-5 at Petco Park after trailing 1-5 in the fifth inning, rallying with a barrage of singles and a four-run seventh. August is looking like a good month for San Diego, who currently hold a two-game lead over the Diamondbacks and are clinging to the final wild-card spot.
In Game 1 of this series against the Twins, the Padres also prevailed, 6-2. France hit a home run in that game. Vázquez and the Padres' bullpen combined to limit Minnesota to just two hits, retiring the final 16 Twins batters in a row.
Minnesota had a bit more hitting on Saturday, scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings. Their first three runs came on solo home runs by Keaschall, Lee, and Culpepper. However, the bullpen derailed their efforts later in the game. The Padres' Merrill had a great day at the plate. He hit a home run to center field with a smooth swing. He drove in two runs, also getting an RBI single and a walk.
