The Yankees finally snapped their losing streak, reducing it to seven games, a very commendable feat considering the Twins had been racking up road wins. The Yankees took the first game of the series 5-2, a game they were heavily favored to win at -225 odds. Even so, their previous losing streak resulted in them relinquishing the division's top spot to the Rays.
Game One featured a couple of hours of back-to-back innings; Clemens greeted Cole with a home run, but Grisham quickly tied the game with one of his own. Ben Rice delivered the game's most memorable hit in the third inning, his 24th home run of the season, driving in Grisham.
The Yankees needed Cole to end their losing streak, and he delivered with particular force. When the third inning ended in rain, the game was suspended for nearly 50 minutes; the ace and veteran returned to pitch two more innings. The late bullpen also responded strongly; Cruz escaped a bases-loaded jam and Bednar recorded his 17th save.
